“Tous Chercheurs” Project: Transmitting Sound Over Long Distances

Can sound be sent across great distances without getting lost in thin air? That was the exciting challenge tackled by 5 students and 3 teachers from the new “Tous Chercheurs” (“We Are All Researchers”) club launched during the 2025–2026 school year.

Step 1: The Scientific Findings

The group first established the limits of human voice and hearing. By studying how sound travels through the air, the verdict was clear: due to energy loss observed experimentally, direct sound fades extremely quickly. It is physically impossible to transmit direct sound over long distances through the air.

Step 2: A Successful Technical Solution

To bypass this hurdle, the team successfully tested and validated an ingenious approach: the electrical method (copper wire). Thanks to electromagnetic induction, the voice is converted into an electrical signal, travels through a cable, and is recreated by a loudspeaker. There are obstacles along the way—it isn’t that easy!
