“Should we colonize Mars?” Listen to our 10th-grade students’ podcasts

As part of a multidisciplinary project, 10th-grade students (Seconde) have created radio podcast scenarios centered around the first journey to Mars by astronauts from the United States, the European Union, China, or Russia. After spending the beginning of the year studying the scientific, technical, geopolitical, environmental, and ethical challenges of such a mission with their three teachers (Mr. Luque in History-Geography, Mr. Landspurg in Physics-Chemistry, and Ms. Poënsin-Caillat in Philosophy), the students learned the techniques of audio storytelling and sound editing.
The project was also enriched by two inspiring encounters: Lucie Riu, a planetary scientist at the European Space Agency, and Jorge Pla-García, an astrobiologist at the Centro de Astrobiología (CAB), INTA-CSIC, involved with NASA’s astrobiology program. Armed with this knowledge, the students then designed sci-fi radio dramas following the conventions of speculative fiction. Through the adventures of their characters projected into the near future, they question the major issues raised by Mars exploration: what does it mean to colonize another planet? What challenges lie ahead for humanity? And at what cost?
